Anaphylaxis refers to an allergic reaction which is
rapid in onset, and could quickly become severe.
Although rare, some cases may lead to long term
sequels or even cause death.

The most common symptoms are in the skin such
as itching, urticaria, generalized redness or
angioedema; it is involved in 80% of cases. The
respiratory system could also be affected.
Symptoms include acute rhinitis, asthma or upper
airway angioedema), the digestive track (with
nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps or diarrhea), or
the cardiovascular system (with palpitations,
increased heart rate or fall in blood pressure). This
may lead to dizziness, loss of consciousness, and in
the worst scenario, to cardiac or respiratory arrest.

The most common causes of anaphylaxis in
pediatric patients are foods and in adults are
drugs/medications. The third cause of anaphylaxis is
bee and wasp stings, due to venom allergy.

Speed of potentially fatal anaphylaxis
It takes only 1 to 2 minutes for a mild allergic
reaction to escalate to anaphylaxis. The faster the
onset of an anaphylaxis reaction, the greater the
likelihood that it will be severe. This is clearly the
main reason why it is of most importance to have
epinephrine auto injectors with you at all times.

Most common anaphylaxis food allergies:
Milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, and
shellfish are often referred to as the “Big Eight” of
food allergies, accounting for 50 percent of all
serious reactions to food.  Sesame allergy seems to
be becoming more common in the United States.
