This is all good news though, I notice that the Digital Economy bill is conspicuous by its absence. Do I detect the vetoing hand of Rupert Murdoch there?
While this is mighty encouraging, one must still be very, very cautious to ensure that rhetoric at this stage is actually turned into deed within a reasonable time.
Or to half remember a commenter on a similar article at The Register: "Don't believe it is dead until you actually see the body lying in a gutter, with a stake through its heart."
Example: "* Ending of storage of internet and email records without good reason." To do that requires disobeying an EU requirement, as NuLabour rolled that policy initiative through the EU to make implementation easier via the "treaty obligations" waffle. Are the LibDims likely to upset the EU this early in their love affair with power?
Here are another three bills which should be abolished via the ConLib's "Great Repeal Bill":
The Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997.
This was an emotionally driven piece of legislation driven by a tabloid media campaign, and which overruled the recommendations of the government's own inquiry (which concluded that the Dunblane shootings were down to a failure of Policing and law enforcement). To that end it was recommended that firearms law required no new restrictions. This was a poorly-thought out, knee-jerk response to a single incident which currently prevents a lawful, harmless form of recreation and has had no effect in curtailing firearms related crime [96], as it only provided powers to remove firearms from lawful, private possession (which criminals by definition will ignore). In 12 years no other Western nation has followed the UK's "shining example" suggesting that the UK is too restrictive, not the other way around.
The Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988
This was a poorly-thought out, knee-jerk response to a single incident which currently prevents a lawful, harmless form of recreation from being enjoyed by law-abiding sportspeople around the world. It has failed to curtail firearms related crime, which has risen exponentially since tht time. In 21 years no other Western nation has followed the UK's "shining example" suggesting that the UK is too restrictive, not the other way around.
Criminal Justice Act 2003 - Section 287
Requires courts to impose a mandatory minimum jail sentence of five years for possession of an illegal firearm. This has produced many notable injustices including the lengthy imprisonment of non-violent and otherwise law-abiding people who have come into possession or retained war trophies and antiques.
@ Mr A Non - thanks for using Tor to post your comment.
Even if the Home Office and other Whitehall departments were forced to repeal a dozen old criminal offences for every new one they create, there would still be thousands of criminal offences which nobody can actually even name, let alone understand if they are falling foul of them or not.
See this Spy Blog article:
ACPO "Retention Guidelines for Nominal Records on the Police National Computer, incorporating the Step Down Model" - no data deletion until you are 100 years old ! About 6000 different criminal offences.
I hear that the lib-dems want everyone to be finger-printed as a condition to receiving a UK passport.
The police want a copy of all the fingerprints, will they get it?.
@ Anon - where exactly did you hear that falsehood from ?
Unnecessarily fingerprinting everyone was and still is, a creepy control freak Labour party policy.
Nobody else, not even the BNP, supports such evil.
