That's the trouble with speculative presentism, with trying to extrapolate the surreal implications of the recent past...
The same thing is happening in the United Kingdom as well e.g. the possible use of Blackberry's and other unofficial email systems, which are not necessarily archived for the police to access during their investigation into various Number 10 Downing Street staff and Prime Minister Tony Blair's inner circle, who may be involved in the current "cash for honours" scandal.
