Olympic Road Network - communist style Zil lanes and corporate advertising monopoly zones

| | Comments (4)

The Labour Government has now published its

Statutory Instrument 2009 No. 1573 - The Olympic Route Network Designation Order 2009

Made: 23rd June 2009

Laid before Parliament: 30th June 2009

Coming into force: 22nd July 2009

This designates a huge number of London streets (with a few in Weymouth, Dorset, where some of the sailing events are to be held), for abuse by foreign Olympic Games officials and corporate sponsors.

If you are a regular vehicle user of these roads, then get to the back of the queue, because you will be snooped on with Automatic Number Plate Recognition CCTV cameras, helicopters, aerial robot drones etc. so that the Olympics apparatchiki can enjoy Communist style Zil lanes, from which ordinary Londoners and the rest of the British public will be banned.

This will cause travel chaos for ordinary London road users.

Even if you are pedestrian or bicyclist, you will be subjected to the evil Advertising Monopoly on behalf of the Official Corporate Sponsors. Woe betide you if are wearing the "wrong" tee-shirt, hat , sports shoes etc.or are drinking the "wrong" brand soft drink or alcohol - you will be harassed by the jobsworth Security enforcers, and probably be arrested as a "guerrilla marketer" or terrorist etc.

The extent of the disruption to many of the main roads affected by this Order is staggering, especially since the athletes and officials are supposedly confined to the Olympic Village, close by the main sports arena venues, so it will mostly be alleged"VIPs" and "celebrities" who use them.

Anyone who thought that it would only be a few roads in the immediate vicinity of the Olympic Games sites, is in for a big shock.

The roads affected are:

If, like me, you live in Central London, you only need a car to leave and re-enter the capital. Public transport is perfectly plentiful to get around. I think schools will be on holiday during the Olympics so school runs should not be affected. Seems a bit of a big whine over an event that is bringing so many millions to London in the short, medium and long term and is only on for a couple of weeks. Still, we all love to whine.

@ Michael Mason - public buses will not be allowed in the "Zil Lanes" either.

Obviously not all the roads mentioned above will have exclusive Zil Lanes, but the busiest ones will have, and these will have a knock on effect on normal public and private transport, over a very wide area far beyond the Olympic venue or central London.

The advertising monopoly restrictions and harassment of alleged "guerrilla marketing" is not just for "a couple of weeks" - they will last until 21st December 2012 i.e. months after the Olympic Games.

The number of Olympics tourists to London being planned for is not anywhere near "millions" - more like 200,000.

Experience from other recent Games is that the normal expected level tourism drops off significantly, as people rightly fear overcrowding, price gouging and intrusive extra "security" theatre.

There are an ENORMOUS amount of roads listed here, but to a large extent, I agree with Michael. The amount of traffic appears to drop significantly during the summer anyway because of the school holidays and the amount of people going somewhere much sunnier than London! It's going to be irritating that the public buses will have to adhere to the rules of the Zil lanes, but most parts of London have good tube or train networks that the public can use instead. I think that people who are that bothered by the suspected upheaval that the Olympics is going to cause, will probably just lie low or go on holiday anyway. Holding the Olympics in our nation's capital is something that we should be so proud of. Unfortunately, there is a culture in this country to promote the negative, but I think in the case of 2012, the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

Folks, how do we stop this theft of road space? is there a mechanism to raise an online petition to Downing Street? Sean

Hints and Tips for Whistleblowers

There are many good people trapped in the bureaucracies which run London. If you are thinking about blowing the whistle on shadowy and powerful people in Government or commerce, and their dubious policies then you need be very careful these days. The mainstream media and bloggers also need to take simple precautions to help preserve the anonymity of their sources e.g.
