Why is the Stephen Lawrence Centre such an ugly and vulnerable building ?

|

The Stephen Lawrence Centre vandalism today is reported as being the "fourth attack on the glazing" so far.

Which idiots decided to specify and approve the huge, two storey tall, energy wasting, vandalism vulnerable, plate glass windows which are reported to cost £15,000 each ??

Apparently 8 such windows have been destroyed in the latest attack - will this be covered by the insurance, or will the taxpayers of London, via the inept London Development Agency, (and the rest the UK Public, since there is also National Lottery money behind this scheme) have to pay for them (again) ?

The fact there are is, apparently., some CCTV camera footage, just points out how useless this technology is in actually deterring vandalism attacks, probably by people who have simply covered their faces.

The politically correct Metropolitan Police Service, and, of, course the Mayor of London's propaganda unit, is treating this criminal damage as a "racist attack", which may well be partly true, but that may not be the only motivation.

Looking at the tv news reports, and at this picture of the Centre, (the other side from that which was damaged today) on their website, it is striking how ugly this obviously architect inflicted design is.

This Evening Standard report has a photo of the damage.

Apparently, one of the main functions of the Stephen Lawrence Centre is:

[...]

The Centre will also act as a hub where industry, community organisations and educational institutions can exchange information on the latest skills and needs in urban design and regeneration.

[...]

The Centre will regularly host exhibitions, seminars and artist residences exploring best practice in urban design.

Hopefully none of the people who are trained in "urban design and regeneration" will repeat the mistake of these windows !

Update:

Apparently the Stephen Lawrence Centre building, at 39 Brookmill Street, Deptford, SE8 4HU (see map) was designed by Adjaye Associates and the wretched windows were designed by 1998 Turner Prize winning "elephant dung" artist Chris Ofili.

Hints and Tips for Whistleblowers

There are many good people trapped in the bureaucracies which run London. If you are thinking about blowing the whistle on shadowy and powerful people in Government or commerce, and their dubious policies then you need be very careful these days. The mainstream media and bloggers also need to take simple precautions to help preserve the anonymity of their sources e.g.
