The BBC reports record oil prices:
Oil prices surge to record high
US oil prices closed at record highs as investors fretted about the impact of the crisis at Russian oil giant Yukos.
Light sweet crude surged $1.06 to a record finish of $42.90, having earlier reached an all time high of $43.05 during the day's trade.
In the UK Brent crude settled up 99 cents at $39.53 a barrel, after hitting $39.68, its highest level since October 1990, ahead of the first Gulf War.
The surge came as bailiffs told Yukos to stop sales, triggering supply fears.
Russia is the world's second biggest oil exporter after Saudi Arabia and Yukos accounts for 20% of the country's oil output."
There is speculation that if there are coordinated terrorist attacks on the oil infrastructrures in the Middle East, then the price of oil could reach $100 dollars a barrel.
Sky News reports: Fuel Hike Scrapped
"The fuel duty rise, planned for September, will not go ahead, the Treasury says.
The government had been threatening to put an extra 1.4p on a litre of fuel.
Tony Blair had said as recently as June that he had no immediate plans to shelve the rise. A decision was due to be made in August.
But the Treasury has benefited from increased tax revenues as a result of high oil prices this year, the Petrol Retailers' Association said.
The Treasury said the economy is strong enough without the extra revenue.
Truck drivers had threatened fuel blockades if the government had not backed down."
This fuel tax increase might only be postponed for a couple of months until the November Treasury review.
Andrew Spence from the Fuel Lobby seems to be happy enough to continue with a dialogue with the Treasury about fuel tax.
