The Scottish Studies Foundation is pleased to announce its first ever Chapbook Competition. Novice, emerging and established writers are invited to submit a manuscript of between 2000 and 5000 words on any topic or theme with a Scottish connection. The winner will have their work published in the form of a chapbook and will receive $500.00 [CAD] and 20 copies of the book. (Read more about the history of chapbooks here.)
Guidelines and General Information:
• The competition is open to everyone regardless of where they reside.
• You do not have to be a Scottish Studies Foundation member to enter.
• Submitted manuscripts may be in the form of a short story, essay, collection of poems or personal anecdotes.
• Illustrations, photographs and other visual material are also welcome but must accompany or compliment the text.
• The suggested word count of 2000 to 5000 words is flexible.
• The only formal requirement is that some aspect of the work should have a connection to Scotland.
• Manuscripts previously published on personal websites or blogs are eligible. Manuscript previously published in book form are not.
• In consulation with the publisher, the Scottish Studies Foundation will design, print, and bind the chapbook.
• The cover will be designed in co-operation with the winning author.
• Chapbook dimension will be approximately 8.5''/22cm in height, and 5.5"/14cm in width.
• The winner will be announced on the Scottish Studies Foundation's website, its newsletter and on various social media platforms.
Submission Requirements
• Manuscripts may be submitted in .doc, docx or PDF format.
• A standard, 12 point font is preferred.
• Illustrations and photos should be sent as separate attachments. JPEG and TIFF formats with a resolution of 300px are recommended.
• Contest entry fee is $20.00 [CAD] payable on submission.
• Multiple submissions are permitted, but each much be accompanied by a $20.00 [CAD] fee.
• Please let us know if the work has been published on a personal website or in a blog post.
• The deadline for submission is July 1, 2021.
• The winner will be announced in September 2021.

• To pay by cheque please use our mailing form which you can access here.
• All authors will receive a certificate of participation as well as acknowledgment that their manuscripts have been received.
• Confirmation of receipt of your manuscript and submission fee will be sent to you via e-mail along with an assigned reference number for your submission.
• Our panel of judges will not be made aware of the name of the author so please do not include your name, e-mail or any identifying characteristics on the manuscript itself.
• You are welcome to include a brief biography or other information about yourself, which will only be shown to the judges after the winning manuscript has been chosen.
