Dr. Nancy Amir was born in
Cairo, Egypt and grew up in Houston, Texas later moving
to Amarillo and graduating from Amarillo High School. Dr.
Amir graduated in 1992 from the University of Texas at Austin
with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and in 1996 from the University
of Houston with a degree in Optometry. While studying there,
she completed her residency in low vision under Dr. Randall Jose,
an internationally recognized low vision specialist, and completed
a Low Vision manual "The A-B-See's of Low Vision. After finishing
her residency in 1997, she settled in San Antonio, Texas
where she now resides with her husband, Dr. Farshid Amir. Dr.
Nancy Amir joined the founder of Santa Rosa Low Vision Clinic,
Dr. Kathleen Fraser-Freeman, as an associate and assumed ownership
in 2000 after Dr. Fraser-Freeman moved to Pittsburgh.
To help her patients, Dr. Amir is always up to date with
the latest technology being developed in low vision. This includes
everything from a small pocket magnifier to electronic magnifiers
and telescope glasses. Low Vision is something very close to
her heart, due to members of her own family who suffer from low
vision. She has a very sincere understanding for patients who
suffer from vision loss, because she knows how it can impact
ones life. She always tries her hardest to find some way of helping
each of her patients. The greatest reward is when a patient tells
her "I never thought I would be able to read again".
